Should achieving CHARTERSHIP be on your goals for 2022?

Chartered status is often seen as a landmark in a professional’s career, but as dynamics change should it still be at the top of your 2022 wish-list?

For many professions achieving-chartered status is the gateway into their career, a recognition of professionalism built upon a blend of theory and practise. Within procurement and supply chain there is the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS) and many others, who offer out chartership to anyone who can demonstrate their competency. The chartering bodies give many reasons as to why someone should hold chartered status, however in this article we explore the three true benefits for someone holding chartered status in 2022 and beyond.

1.) Jobs – The first benefit is through job opportunities; reports suggest that you are more likely to be offered a job if you hold chartered status. Therefore, having MCIPS or a similar chartership on your CV is a sure-fire way to land yourself an interview. However, a search of roles online will tell you that suitable experience is often enough to get you an interview, and employers are unlikely to reject suitably qualified and experienced candidates on the basis they don’t have chartered status.

2.) Salary – Achieving chartered status can result in additional earning potential. CIPS suggest that the difference between MCIPS and non-MCIPS salaries can be up to 17%. This is clear evidence that on average, a chartered professional is paid more. However, experience is usually reflected in pay and therefore for senior roles, the lack of chartership is often overlooked with salaries negotiated based upon value to the role rather than academic qualifications.

3.) Personal Satisfaction – Finally, achieving chartered status often brings personal satisfaction, this is due to both the academic and experiential requirements to receive it and therefore the time it takes. Having chartered status is therefore seen as one of the career highlights and a real milestone occasion.

It is clear from the above that chartered status can allow you to get a better job, earn more money and have a greater sense of personal satisfaction. However, in most areas not being chartered will not hold you back, particularly in senior positions. However, for those in junior or middle management roles, chartership certainly helps accelerate your progression!
